After choosing the best compound bow your next decision is the type of arrows to use with it. There are many different types of arrows, made from a range of materials with different points and fletches so which ones will be best for your and the type of archery you intend to do? Will you be using your bow for target practice or for hunting live animals? You will need to consider the various options for arrows and select the type most suitable for your purpose. This short guide is intended to help you make a good choice.

Wooden Arrows

In the past all arrows were made from wood but nowadays wooden arrows are used mainly for beginners and for longbow competitions. They are not popular for other uses as they do not give consistent results due to slight differences in the shape and weight of the arrows. These types of arrows are easily broken and warp over time although they are cheap and could be the best choose for beginners.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are more consistent than wooden arrows as they are much more uniform, however, they break easily as they are brittle. They are can be fitted easily to a range of draw lengths and are often used for hunting.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows manufactured from aluminum are a lot more durable than wooden or fiberglass arrows. They are made in a consistent manner so are reliable. They are made in a extensive range of types and sizes so you are sure to find one correct for your bow and style. Aluminium arrows are reliable and consistent which makes them perfect for use while hunting or in competitions and they are made with interchangeable arrowheads. They do cost more than fiberglass arrows so, if you are a beginner and tend to lose a lot of arrows, they may not be suitable. Cheaper arrows would be a better choice until your skills improve!

Carbon Arrows

These types of arrows are used by more serious archers as they are high speed, durable and consistent. They are constructed with a core of aluminium with an outer coating of carbon composite material and are very strong so will not break easily like fiberglass arrows. They are undoubtedly the best arrows available but they are much more expensive so are commonly used only by serious archers.

Other Things to Think About

Fletches today are usually constructed from synthetic or plastic material although you can still find traditional feather fletches. Fletches are important to impart stability to the arrow as it flies and to increase speed. Have a go with different types to find out how the different types feel in use. You also need to consider the point. If you are hunting you will need a specially made point. Remember to protect your arrows with a quiver and always carry spare draw strings.
